V3 is a new BYOC computer gaming event held occasionally in Christchurch, New Zealand. The events are run by a similar team to L3 LANs, who are one of the largest and oldest regular LAN parties in New Zealand. Events are public, but entry is limited to those 16 or over.
Origin
The concept of V3 was mooted between members of the L3 admin team several times from 2005 onwards, but only really gained momentum in 2006, as the group gained a stronger autonomy logistically. It was started to allow gamers under 18 years of age access to larger LAN events in the south island, which L3 (by virtue of its format) was unable to provide.
The name 'V3' itself does not stand for anything, in a manner consistant with the L3 name. It was chosen simply as a similar name to convey the relationship between the two groups.
Differences to L3
Because of its mission to bring larger scale gaming LANs to a younger audience, there are several key differences between V3 events and L3 events. These include:
- V3 is R16, L3 is strictly R18
- V3 bars all alcohol, L3 is sometimes BYO
- V3 runs CS and CS:Source tournaments, L3 discourages CS
Some other differences at least initially include:
- V3's are run at a lower price, and for a slightly shorter time period
- V3's will be run with a higher emphasis on gaming tournaments, and a lower emphasis on extra social events
